What $249 Buys That Is Real

A name people already know. That has value, and an owner who would rather not justify an unfamiliar provider to a bank or an investor has bought something with the fee.

LegalZoom's pricing is also honest about itself. One figure, no introductory rate, the same amount in year six as in year one. Plenty of cheaper-looking competitors cannot say as much, and the consistency is worth crediting before anything else gets said.

And What It Does Not Buy

Standing. Wyoming applies the same test to every registered agent in the state regardless of what they charge, and there is no premium tier for a well-known name to occupy. A $249 agent and a $90 agent answer to an identical standard.

Two Wyoming Filings That Refuse to Go Online

This is worth knowing before you pay anybody, because it describes how Wyoming actually works rather than how it markets itself.

The state has spent decades promoting itself as the easiest place in the country to set a company up from somewhere else. One hundred dollars files the articles. The wizard runs in a browser. A great many entities on the Wyoming register are owned by people who have never crossed the state line. So you would reasonably assume the whole relationship is digital.

Two filings say otherwise.

The first is the agent change. Under W.S. 17-28-102 a business entity moves its registered agent or registered office by delivering a statement to the Secretary of State, and Wyoming has decided that delivery means the post office. The form carries an explicit instruction that it cannot be accepted via email. It gets signed, mailed with a check for $5, and takes up to fifteen business days at the Business Division. Wyoming statutes make no provision for expediting it, so there is nothing on sale that changes the timeline.

The second is the annual report, though only above a threshold. Wyoming's report doubles as a license tax, the greater of $60 or $0.0002 per dollar of assets held in the state, which for most companies means a flat $60. Should that calculation ever exceed $500, the state stops accepting the report online and sends it back to the mail as well.

So the jurisdiction that industrialized remote company ownership handles two of its own filings by envelope and patience. Which tells you what to look for in an agent. The value is not in how fast they can file, because nobody files this fast. It is in whether they open what arrives and tell you the same day.

3. Wait up to fifteen business days. No expedite exists.
4. Look the company up in the state's business search and check that the agent line now reads our name.

Step five is where people get hurt. Cancelling a subscription has no effect whatsoever on a public register, and for those three working weeks LegalZoom is still the party Wyoming would route a summons through. Stop paying them early and you have manufactured a window in which your company's official point of contact is an address nobody is being paid to check.
